| About | 'Statue of Liberty' was built on October 28, 1886, founded in 1924 as a National Monument. The Statue of Liberty is 305 feet (93 meters) tall. The statue is maintained by the National Park Service as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and is a major tourist attraction. The Statue of Liberty was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, and Gustave Eiffel built its metal framework. The copper Statue is a figure of Libertas, a robed Roman liberty goddess. The statue holds a torch above her head with her right hand, and in her left-hand carries, a tabula ansata inscribed. The Statue of Liberty National Monument offers views from several webcams positioned on the Statue's torch. They offer free entry for Children Under 4. In addition, guided tours and ferries are available. |
