AboutOld Gorhambury House is a classy and iconic landmark in St Albans, UK. The memorial is a ruined Elizabethan mansion, a leading and pioneering example of the Elizabethan prodigy residence. Old Gorhambury House was built in 1563–68 by Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper, and was visited many times by Queen Elizabeth. It is a Grade I listed building designed in the style of the Neo-Palladian. Old Gorhambury House is one of the largest houses built by the architect known for his work on the Bank of England and smaller villas across London City. It was built after Old Gorhambury fell into disrepair, and many of the same bricks were used. In the 19th century, further extensions were made to Gorhambury. A prolific builder, Sir Nicholas spent many years expanding and adapting the residence. The site is now maintained by English Heritage, and is entry is free for everyone.
