About | Mildura Weir was constructed in August 1923. The Mildura Wharf is about 800 metres upstream from here and was essential to river transport from the 1800s. The weir aims to raise the water level and the pressure from the Mildura and Red Cliffs irrigation pumps. The Weir consist of 24 steel trestles, each weighing approximately 11 tonnes. The storage capacity of the Weir Pool is 36,200 megalitres. By opening four butterfly valves upstream, the lock is filled. Via two tunnels, water reaches the locked room, accommodating approximately 4.5 megalitres. Visitors are welcome during the day to enter the island between the lock and the weir. The island's 15 hectares of bushland provides many native species with a sanctuary. |
