About | Walnut Street Bridge is a community group that funds a federal grant to renovate the bridge and use city supplies. The Smith Bridge Company assembled the bridge's superstructure. The bridge is historically significant as an extraordinarily long and old example of its type. Today's oldest non-military highway bridge is restored and revitalized as a footbridge and a linear park. It connects downtown Chattanooga to the north shore and a favorite of residents and visitors alike. A community campaign comprised of visionary activists, civic leaders, and historical preservationists banded together to save the bridge, imagining it a vibrant pedestrian bridge. |
