AboutSandal Castle is a Grade II listed building and built in the early 12th century. The castle is best known for its role in the Battle of Wakefield in 1460, while the Wars of the Roses, where Richard, Duke of York, was killed. The bailey castle was raised to 10 metres or 33 ft with the 7 metres or 23 ft deep ditch surrounding it. Visitors can walk around the area and see superb views of the Calder Valley. The former visitor centre has been converted into the Castle Café. This independent family-run café has proved very popular with visitors due to its fantastic view of the castle. Their castle is presently undergoing conservation work and improvements. Sandal Castle site is open to the public all year round, and parking is free.
