| About | King Alfred's Tower is fantastic and over 40 metres (131 ft) high with a circumference of 51 metres (167 ft). It is a triangular tower two miles northwest of the garden, was designed by Henry Flitcroft for Stourhead's second owner, Sir Henry Hoare II. The tower's centre is empty, and a mesh has been added at roof level to stop birds from entering the space. Each of the three corners of the triangular structure has a round projection. The tower is on Kingsettle Hill and belongs to the National Trust. The monument is named as a grade I listed building. The tower was named after King Alfred, who established his rule here in 870. The tower honours the accession of George III in 1760 & the end of the Severn Years War. It is one of the fantastic and admiring landmarks to be visited in the Somerset region to feel a glimpse of historical pride. |
