AboutReading Abbey is a large and ruined abbey, which was founded by Henry I in 1121. If you are interested in the Civil War and Henry VIII, then Reading Abbey is the perfect place to get information about the war. It has a small selection of artefacts from the site and the river. The inner rubble cores of the walls of many of the major buildings of the abbey still stand. The Abbey's Inner Gateway adjoins Reading Crown Court and Forbury Gardens, also known as the Abbey Gateway. You can also see plenty of grassy space for picnics and information boards with historical facts and a few quirky snippets to amuse kids. The pedestrian area around the ruins has been beautifully updated to make it easier to walk around. Reading Abbey is a well-conserved historic site and public space for Reading.
