It was built as a courthouse, and it is one of the oldest and most prominent buildings in Chelmsford. Shire Hall is an iconic Georgian building classified as Grade II-it was built by local architect and Essex County Surveyor John Johnson and featured a façade of Portland Stone. The design included symmetrical central frontage with five bays facing onto Tindal Square. The main section of three bays projected slightly forward featured three arched entrances on the ground floor.
