| About | Merlion Park is an iconic landmark and major tourist attraction in Singapore. It is the statue of Half-fish and half-lion. It symbolises Singapore's beginnings as a fishing village called Temasek, and the head represents Singapore’s original name, Singapura, or ‘lion city’ in Malay. It was designed by late Singaporean sculptor Mr Lim Nang Seng and his eight children in 1972. The statue is 8.6 metres and weighs 70 tonnes. In 2002, the Merlion was shifted 120 meters from its original location to where it now stands in Merlion Park. The present Merlion is four times bigger than the original. |
