About | Elephanta Caves is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since the 1990s, the caves have been preserved during the 1970s, and the great cave was restored to its present form. The cave temples in this site are predominantly dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. This network of sculpted caves is situated on the island of Elephanta. The caves are the famous tourist locale that contains rock cut stone sculptures. It demonstrates the syncretism of Hindu Buddhist concepts and iconography with the large monolithic 20 feet (6.1 m) Trimurti Sadashiva (three-faced Shiva), Nataraja (Lord of dance) and Yogishvara (Lord of Yoga) being the most celebrated. The Archaeological Survey of India now maintains Elephanta Caves. The orientation of the main temple and other temples' relative positions are arranged in a mandala pattern. Elephanta Caves are surrounded by vegetation and consist of religious motifs showing the different forms and incarnations. |
