About | The University of Guelph's Arboretum is 100 years old, modelled after Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum. Plantings are begun in 1971 and are now maturing to create a spectacular ecosystem. The Arboretum aims to establish unique gardens, botanical collections, and programs for gene conservation. It covers 165 hectares of signed trails, including 8.2 km. Visitors can explore 38 mammal species, 188 bird species, 39 species of butterflies, 18 herptiles, and 1,700 species of trees and shrubs are found. At The Arboretum, virtually every tree and shrub native to southern Ontario grows. It welcomes 73,500 visitors per year. They also provide workshops on owls, mushrooms or shrubs to sketching nature, wildflower photography and garden design. The Arboretum provides a pleasant stroll or a study of the fantastic plant diversity. |
