About | St. Lawrence Market is a significant public market building in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. English immigrant architect Henry Bowyer Lane designed the market building. The building once housed Toronto's first permanent city hall and jailhouse from 1845 to 1899. The market has two main floors. The first floor is the primary space, and it extends through the entire length of the building. It has one ample open space with an extensive overhanging roof structure and windows on each side. The ground level is partly underground, opening to the outdoors on the south end of the building. The market is situated on the edge of the former lakeshore, and the elevation drops over 10 feet between the south and north ends. The south end of the ground floor opens to ground level at The Esplanade street. The building is surrounded along the west, east and south sides is a mezzanine, where seating and tables are available. |
