About | Caloundra Lighthouses is a heritage-listed pair of lighthouses at 3 Canberra Terrace. The original 1896 lighthouse, designed by the Queensland Marine Department with drawings signed by E A Cullen, engineer, was an innovative Queensland construction type. It played an integral role in Queensland's system of coastal navigation aids from the 1890s to the 1970s. The 1968 signal station, light and radar installation replaced the old lighthouse, which was relocated to Golden Beach. It was returned to its original site in 1999 after the new lighthouse ceased operation. Caloundra Lighthouses have endured as a significant symbol of the town and include Caloundra's oldest surviving structure. The Lighthouses are now used for educational and cultural tourism purposes. The Lighthouses provide evidence of the history of lighthouses from both ends of the time scale. |
